Boxing: Cinco de Mayo, a holiday for world boxing

Mexicans know the meaning of the celebration of May 5thwe know that it is about the Battle of Puebla, the defense of Mexican territory against the French invasion.

This date has been positioned through the strength of migrants in the United States, and boxing had a lot to do to position May 5th as a great celebration, along with September 16th, Mexico’s Independence Day.

Boxing events in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Texasmainly, gave it the dimension of a national holiday and for more than 30 years the most important fights in the world have been held on the weekend close to this date.

Great legends fought on Cinco de Mayo

Migrants started this tradition celebrating important fights of Mexican idols such as Ruben “Pas” Olivares, Carlos Zarate and Salvador Sanchez, almost 50 years ago.

It was in the 90’s when 5 May and 16 September became the basis for promoters and television stations around the world to make their annual calendar based on those two weekends.

Great representatives of Mexico have fought on this important date, for example, the three great Mexican featherweights, Erik “Terrible” Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera. Also Manny Pacquiao starred 3 dates in Las Vegas. The baton has been passed from legend to legend.

Julio Cesar Chavez passed it to Oscar De la Hoya, Golden Boy passed it to Floyd Mayweather Jr. who owned the Cinco de Mayo four years in a row! And currently who is the face of world boxing, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

El Canelo took the baton in 2016 when he defeated Britain’s Amir Khan defending his WBC middleweight world title.

It is a reality that the most popular sports in the world have a constant calendar year after year with specific dates when their biggest events are presented causing the world to stop and be fascinated by the elite sporting spectacles.
