Weekend Family Fun: Juneteenth, Comics, Puppets and More

Happy weekend! We hope all the moms and mom-figures out there have a marvelous Mother’s Day Weekend! Are you looking for some things to do? We’ve rounded up some family-fun in and around town. Have a look!

Watchung Booksellers (54 Fairfield Street, Watchung Plaza, Montclair) will host Alliah Agostini, Juneteenth Storytime on the Green on Friday at 4:00 PM. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) continues to host the Family Photo Scavenger Hunt. Held daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, bring your camera or phone for this month’s hunt. There is a new theme each month, and May’s theme is “The Nose Knows.” Grab your camera and follow your nose. Use your senses to find all kinds of scents and smells around the gardens. The cost is $ 10 per family or group of 6 or fewer. Preregistration is required.

Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morristown) will host Mother’s Day Gift Workshop: Soap Making on Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM and from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, for ages seven and up With an adult. Happy Mother’s Day! Adult and child pairs will create three bars of soap for mom, grandma or anyone special in their life. Using glycerin, herbs and essential oils, everyone will make their own unique soap blend! The cost is $ 15 per child / adult pair. Preregistration is required.

Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host Storytelling with Sabrina Wasonga Gitau accompanied by Samite as part of Montclair Literary Festival on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM.. Hear stories about the power of unity, the beauty of culture, and the lessons we learn from the love of animals. Sabina Wasonga-Gitau’s stories are interwoven with songs and chants in the Swahili language, and she encourages her audience to join her. Kayamba, one of the stories Sabina will be sharing, is an example of what we can learn from our elders.

Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center (247 Southern Blvd, Chatham Township) will host Mother’s Day Stroll from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Bring your mom out for a guided stroll led by a naturalist and enjoy the splendor of the natural world on her special day! This event is free, but preregistration is required.

Reeves-Reed Arboretum (165 Hobart Avenue, Summit) hosts Discovery Weekends on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Drop by the Stackhouse Education Center on Saturdays and Sundays anytime between 9am-3pm for this self-guided program Borrow a magnifying glass (please remember to return it once you’re done), grab an interactive activity guide, and head out to see what wonders big and small await. There may be a surprise or two , a clue to follow, a mystery to solve, a chance to create, and always an engaging nature activity. Each week is a new discovery! On Saturday and Sunday, Newark Museum of Art (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host Family Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. As a special event this Saturday only, Newark Museum of Art (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host Puppetonia at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. This event is free with general admission. Since its inception in 2006, Puppetonia has taught children so much more than just their ABC’s and 123’s. The puppets are friendly and cuddly, bringing to life old bedtime stories, funny incidents children encounter in their daily lives, and exploring nature and community. are encouraged to move to the rhythm, follow verbal instructions, and practice sequential movement. About a thousand butterflies have landed at Liberty Science Center To help us celebrate spring! Visitors can feel the magic of butterflies fluttering around you, feeding on plants and nectar, and even landing on your shoulder or finger. Butterfly House will be open daily through May 8 and is included with any admission ticket.

Also at Liberty Science Center (222 Jersey City Blvd, Jersey City) is Minecraft: The Exhibition. This is a 6,000-sq.-ft. Multimedia experience that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, whether they play Minecraft or not.
